Bunions

What is a bunion?

Bensonhurst BensonhurstA bony hump found on the base of the big toe where it joins the rest of the foot is called a bunion. This condition can make the toe push into the other toes, causing pain. The joint where the toe bends when walking is usually the most affected by a bunion. The toes can also be vulnerable to pressure and friction caused by certain shoes.

How can a podiatrist treat bunions?

The podiatrist will take x-rays and examine the foot to determine how bad the bunion is, and a blood sample may be used to determine if arthritis is present. Once this information is obtained, treatments can include:

  • Inserts and orthopedic shoes - when the bunion is mild, orthopedic shoes or custom inserts can be used to help move the toe back to its normal position.
  • Medications - pain relievers and anti-inflammatories can reduce pain and swelling. If over-the-counter drugs do not help, medications can be prescribed by the podiatrist.
  • Surgery - when the condition is very severe, surgery is can be necessary. Usually, the bone under the big toe will be realigned with small incisions in the nearby ligaments. Excess bone can also be removed.
